Watch Out For These Harmful Sun Screen Ingredients
Working out in the sun this summer? Watch out for these toxic ingredients found in most sunscreens.
OXYBENZONE is the main sun blocking ingredient in 95% of the sun screens on the market, and may have an impact on the endocrine system (the glands in your body that make hormones), increased levels of oxybenzone in adolescent boys led to lower testosterone levels.
Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are also linked to the destruction to coral reefs and reproduction of ocean life. Hawaii has banned any sun screen with these ingredients.
A 2015 study of coral reefs in Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Israel determined oxybenzone “leaches the coral of its nutrients and bleaches it white. It can also disrupt the development of fish and other wildlife.” Even a small drop is enough to damage delicate corals.
Sun screens with Zinc Oxide should be considered over sun screen lotions that contain Oxybenzone and Octinoxate.
