Joaquin Rivera is much more than an insanely in-shape, mature man. He’s also an engineer, ranch owner, gym owner, teacher, competitive bodybuilder, and an inspiration. He epitomizes what it means to be a Silver Wolf.

How can I feel better and look better? A question I hear almost daily. I always answer: “Fitness is a personal decision, but a group effort.” Associate with the best to be the best. After all, you quickly become just like the people you associate with the most.

Can you imagine being best friends with Steve Reeves, Frank Zane, Arnold Schwarzenegger or the like? What if your brother or sister was a wellness doctor or nutritionist, or your spouse a sports trainer? How could you not have the tools to become the best with that amount of support and group effort?

Not only does “association with the best to be the best” apply to fitness. It reaches many aspects in life, from childhood development to sports to education to career to happiness. As I reflect on my past, I realize how fortunate I was to be associated with some pretty amazing people.

In my world, at least, they were the best, and they were willing to teach. For instance, my grandfather, still an active man at the age of 102, taught me to work the cattle ranch. My father, uncles and cousins taught me to work construction. My high school coaches taught me the discipline of sports. My professors challenged me through the school of civil engineering. My colleagues trained me to become a professional engineer. My fitness training partners pushed me beyond comprehension, and my wife introduced me to true love.

Sure everyone believes their support was the best, but here is my difference. Because I associated with the best, I now own a ranch. I built up my own construction company to a point of earning millions per year. I was recruited to play football. I performed as a teacher’s assistant and taught minority engineering students. I became a professional engineer and began my own structural engineering consulting firm. My wife and I are raising children. And finally, I built my own gym and train private clients. If that sounds busy and stressful, you are right! But with the right support group anything can be done.

I am currently a 44 year old NPC physique competitor, and I hope to inspire my family and friends to a new level of health and fitness. I encourage them to follow me because I always seem to be surrounded by the best. For example, I have teamed up with my long time training partner, Shawn Powers. I have teamed up with a fitness, nutrition and supplement company, Silver Wolf Nutrition in order to teach the concept of Unconventional Bodybuilding and provide for the nutrition and supplementation needs.

Again, in my world they are the best. Shawn is the best kept secret in the health, fitness and the fight industry with credentials and accomplishments beyond belief.
