I've always found that a good adventure requires three essential components: good activities, interesting travel means, and unexpected events. While you can't really plan all of these things out, there are ways to make them more likely to happen.

Good Activities. Finding good activities is the easiest one to ensure. You could always go online and type, "What to do in Hawaii," but chances are that you're going to get the same mundane answers you always hear: go snorkeling, hike the mountain, attend a luau, blah, blah, blah. Rather than doing that, you're better off trying to find the experts who run the activities, and find out what THEY would do. Chances are, they avoid common tourist junk like the plague!

Travel Means. In regards to your travel means, try to attempt several different ways of getting around in every place you go. Yes, you could rent a car, but have you ever tried a moped or a bike to get around a new place? If you usually fly, why not take the extra few hours to ride a train if possible? If your destination is near a coast, why not give a boat or kayak a shot? The point is, even if the travel means may not be the most efficient, they could be the most interesting.

Unexpected Events. Finally, a good adventure always includes some unexpected events. Luckily, if you're attempting the previous too components, these will probably happen without you trying to make them happen. What you need to realize is that unexpected events are likely to be more interesting than your planned activities. Accept them, even if that means your plans get derailed slightly.
